Kids’ First Quilts

Meet Sidney and Scarlett. These lovely young ladies came over on Tuesday for their second quilting lesson. Both of them are working on making their very first quilts. Sidney is 11 and is making a big quilt to go on her bed, while Scarlett is 9 and is making a smaller matching quilt to go on Cassandra's (her doll's) bed.

In their first lesson a few weeks ago we cut out all of their squares and they learnt how to stack-and-slash two squares to make their blocks. They then took all their squares home and finished making all their blocks ready for their second lesson. On Tuesday we got all of their blocks trimmed to size and then had fun arranging them into their quilt tops.

Have I mentioned how much I love having this design wall?! My quilt had to be vacated to make room for Sidney's beautiful creation, but it's so easy to just place your blocks on the wall and pull them off again that this wasn't a problem at all.

The girls just loved the way they looked once all laid out together, and so do I!

Once all laid out, Scarlett powered through piecing all her top together and even got her quilt sandwiched and half of the quilting done! Here you can see her very carefully sewing her straight lines, wearing my favourite quilting gloves, which are really just some cheap gardening gloves from Bunnings.

With the time it took to get all of Sidney's blocks trimmed and squared up, and then placed and arranged just right, she didn't get nearly as much sewn. She did however get to piece two rows together and so is set to piece the rest of it herself at home, ready to quilt next time they come over.

The girls have been doing such a great job and Sidney has really improved so much in her accuracy and straight line sewing. She has realised how much easier it is to sew slowly and carefully the first time, rather than zoom through it and then have to unpick and start again when it's not right.

I can't wait to have the girls back and see them finish their wonderful quilts.

Happy quilting!.
